Possibly operated with Las Vegas Hotel/Club. 1936: Bank Club opens, sign by YESCO (RJ 10/3/36); closed circa 1938. 1938: Apache Indian Shop (RJ 7/16/38, 11/27/39). 1942: Las Vegas Bar. 1949: Kolstad’s Toggery. 1954: Goldrings Buffeteria. 1962, March: Seen w/ sign that says The Westerner Presents Live Entertainment. 1962, August: Used as Club Bingo Annex. Owner is Jackie Gaughan. 1983: Incorporated into Pioneer Club along with 21-23 Fremont. 1998: Sold to Schiff Enterprises, later opens as Viva Vegas shop.

    20-22-24 Fremont was one divided building, built in 1905, demolished in 2017. 1905-1910s: New York Store. 1920s: Las Vegas Coffee Shop & Bakery. 1926, Aug: A.C. Kitchen. 1931: State Cafe (RJ 4/22/31). 1950, Jun-Dec: Lynch’s Old Curiosity Shop. 1952: Buckley’s Jackpot Club. 1959: Starlite Slots ("TE" seen in 7/59). 1961: Pioneer Loans. 1973: Mecca Slots, owner Sylvia Sirotta. 1974: H Pastor purchase from Sirotta, "late 1974." 1975: Golden Goose opened June 1975, briefly closed, the re-opened 7/4/75. Golden Goose sign by YESCO, designed by Jack Larsen Sr. (Sources: Pastor interview, 1/24/15, 10/25/19; B. Poblocki interview; RJ 1/13/98, RJ 3/13/2020). 1981, Sep: Pastor buys Glitter Gulch, merged with Golden Goose (RJ 8/13/81) - "one business govenerned by one gaming license with about 200 slots" (RJ 12/5/91). 1991, Dec 4: becomes Girls of Glitter Gulch.     1905: Kuhn Mercantile (LV Times 8/26/05). 1910s-1920s: Boggs Bros Grocers. (Fuller’s Index lists a 21 Club in the early 30s, but no other evidence exists.) 1934: Barrel House Club (1934 dir., no known photos), closed 1938. Became Las Vegas Barbeque (L & G DuBois) and various restaurants. 1952, May: Copper Grill. 1954: "Copper Club" sign seen around Christmas. 1955, May: Golden Slot (RJ 5/25/55), H Bittner, C Tsouras, seen with sign incomplete. 1958: Cecil Lynch’s Fortune Club opens 2/18/58 using the same sign as Golden Slot and the “Fortune Club” sign from 109 Fremont's Fortune Club. Circa late 1960: “Fortune Club” letters replaced with Ace Liquors sign directly in front of the cowboy face. Slot machine sign removed circa fall '65-spring '66. 1966: Pizza Joint seen summer, fall; Goldie’s opens late '66 (Alex Gold, Vic Havas, RJ 12/15/66). 1970: Goldies becomes Club 22 (RJ 4/3/70). 1973, June: Mr. Reed’s (Reed Snitker, RJ 6/14/73). 1980, Oct 1: Opening of Bob Stupak’s Glitter Gulch, with “Vegas Vicky” sign by Charles Barnard/Ad Art (RJ, Magic Sign). 1981: bought by H Pastor, merged into Golden Goose. Sign remains in operation until 2017.

    24 Fremont

    Nevada Bakery (1930s). Shoe Shop (30s-40s). Dixie Delicatessen (1946-1960s). Building split with Vegas Jewely & Loan (1950s), Bill's/Ace Loan (1960s-1990s). 0.8-acre property sold by L'Chaim (H. Gabay) to Circa Las Vegas in 2016 for $13M.

    Lot 4, Block 14. Building date unknown. 1927: Gareheim Music Co (RJ 10/15/27). c. 1929: LV Jewelry & Loan. 1931: White Spot Cafe opens 8/26/31 (RJ). 1937/1939: second sign after remodeling (RJ 4/18/39). c. 1946: third sign. 1950: fourth sign (possibly a modified version of the third sign? by YESCO, RJ 7/14/50 - also seen with "Arcade" in place of Cafe). 1951: 49’er Club grand opening announced 12/51. 1952: license revoked (RJ 2/7/52); becomes Last Chance (named after the fictional casino in The Las Vegas Story), possibly never opened (RJ 4/17/52); reopened as Fortune Club (RJ 12/5/52) adapting 49'er Club sign. 1955: Fortune Club merges with Nevada Club (RJ 10/16/55). 1957: annexed by Nevada Club (RJ 5/21/57; last seen 4/57).

    109 Fremont. Vegas Sweet Shop (1920-1941), Mandalay Bar (1941-1947), Santa Anita Turf Club (1948-1952), Nevada Club (1953-1969), Golden Nugget

    Lot 5, Block 14. Building date unknown. 1920: Vegas Sweet Shop aka Sweet Shoppe. 1941: Mandalay Bar moves from Frontier Club to this space, as an English tavern (McAfee Will Open Unique Bar Here Tomorrow Night. Review-Journal, 11/26/41). Last seen with large horizontal sign c. ‘46-47; not seen late ‘48. 1948: Santa Anita Turf Club opens under D & S Stearns, E Margolis; sign by YESCO (RJ 2/27/48).1953: Nevada Club opens in October (RJ 10/8/53). 1957: Nevada Club expansion into 107-109 Fremont (construction seen 5/57). 1959: wall and reader board constructed over the marquee. 1961: Reader board sign installed under the marquee facing the sidewalk. 1963: name change to Diamond Jim’s Nevada Club (RJ 6/20/63); marquee changed after 8/63. c. 1967: marquee sign changed to Lucky Nevada Club. c. 1968: marquee sign changed to Nevada Club (same as 1957 sign). c. 1969: Golden Nugget expansion, after 9/69.

    113-115 Fremont. Frontier Club (1939-1954), Lucky Strike Club (1954-1963), Lucky Casino (1963-1968), Golden Nugget

    Lots 6-7, Block 14. Built 1923 by Judge H Lillis whose previous building here was destroyed by fire. Adcock & Ronnow and Elks lodge occupy (LVA 12/8/23). 1930s: Cornet store (first of 3 locations on Fremont St). 1934: S & S Variety store. 1939: Frontier Club opened 5/10/39 by Guy McAfee. 1940: S & S Variety continues occupying 113 Fremont until Apr. 1940 when it's leased by McAfee (S & S Store Opens Clean-Up Sale, Review-Journal, 4/14/40). Mandalay Bar opens in 113 (RJ 7/4/40). 1941: Vertical sign raised, Horizontal sign added across the club and Mandalay Bar moved next door to 109 Fremont (11/26/41). 1954: Frontier Club closed, sign removal 5/25/54 (RJ). Lucky Strike Club opens 6/30/54 (RJ) - partners including Winter, Prell. "Architects Wayne McAllister and William Wagner are responsbile for the design of the entire project" (RJ 7/1/54). 1959: Front doors removed, replaced with air curtain. 1961: becomes a part of Sahara-Nevada Corp in sale to Webb corp. Closed before 3/63. 1963: Lucky Casino opened 5/25/63 (RJ), Sahara-Nevada Corp. Bingo on 2nd floor. 160 ft sign by YESCO began 5/63, finished 7/63 (RJ 3/27/63, 7/28/63). 1967: Sold to Bob Van Santen/Diamond Jim's in April; sold to Golden Nugget in Nov (RJ 11/7/67). 1968: Closed, sign removed circa Feb/Mar 1968. Golden Nugget expansion, completed in June (RJ 6/9/68).

    117 Fremont. Lot 8, Block 14. 

    1929: Eagles Lodge (LVA 6/6/29 p1 col3). Boulder Drug Co occupies (RJ 7/3/29). 1930: Neon sign (RJ 7/23/30). 1948: Boulder Drug closes (RJ 7/4/48) and Golden Nugget expands into the space, later extending the "Lounge/Saloon" marquee over 117, with the Eagles Bldg still visible in through '55.

    123 Fremont. Lot 9, Block 14. 

    1924: Martin-Ferron building, constructed by EW Griffith. The Oasis on the ground floor, Oakes studio upper floor (LVA 3/15/24). 1931: Oasis now called Oasis Cafe. 1932, Apr: Neon sign installed (“10ft by 6ft sign…a palm stree, outlined with neon tubing…installed by the QRS sign company” – RJ, 4/28/32). 1946: closed, incorporated into Golden Nugget.

    127-131 Fremont. E.W. Griffith Building (1911-1945), Golden Nugget (1946-)

    220 Fremont. 1910s: Woodard's Garage. 1920s: Expansion, Conklin Bros Garage. The garage was divided up into seperate businesses by the 40s. 1947: Fremont Theatre. 1975: demolished, replaced with Fremont Hotel expansion.
    230 Fremont. 1928: Service station opened by P.A. "Pop" Simon (LVA 4/28/31). 1950: Simon Bldg (RJ 12/8/50, 8/29/51) - Trading Post and Melodie Lane Restaurant below, offices above. 1972, Apr: becomes Red Garter casino. 1975, Mar: Simon Bldg demolished, replaced by Fremont Hotel expansion.

    213 Fremont. 1929: L. H. Rockwell building (Age 1/29/29 p1) with "1928" on top of the bldg. Grand Hotel occupies top floor. Skaggs drug store on the ground floor, 215 Fremont. Grand Hotel closed after 1963. 1976: Demolished, replaced with Four Queens expansion.
    219 Fremont. 1927: A. C. Delkin building (LVA 9/27/1927). 1976: Demolished, replaced with Four Queens expansion.

    316-318 Fremont. 1944. Christensen's Jewelers (316), Sam's Cafe (318). 1948: Arnold Christensen's Men's Wear (316). 1980s: Souvenir shop.

    319 Fremont. 1931, Boggs Bldg, JC Penney on the ground floor (RJ 8/24/31) until 1952. 1950s-1960s: Thrifty Drugs. 1980s: Bought by Schiff Enterprises, Upper floors covered. Still in use.
    321 Fremont. 1920: Golden Hotel (Jimmy "the Cinch" Saravel, RJ 12/13/49). 1929: neon sign (LVA 4/30/29). c. 1935: becomes Wollman Hotel. (Murray & Agnes Wollman, RJ 12/13/49, 5/1/77). 1943: sold (RJ 12/29/43). c. 1950: becomes office bldg. 1954: demolished (RJ 8/26/54), replaced with commercial building (in use). 1975: Western Village (RJ 3/18/75), figure of miner added c.     Fremont Street Experience (1995-) South 400-block Fremont St replaced with FSE Parking Garage.

  • 401 Fremont. 1920s: Morris or Norris residence (1926, 34 dir). 1940s: Signal Station. 1949, Jan. 14: Cornet building, constructed '47-48, contractor Robert E McKee. Demolished 1994.
    411 Fremont. Squires residence (1926, 34 dir) until mid 30s.
    415 Fremont. 1920s: Williams residence (1926 dir)
    425 Fremont. 1929, Aug: Carl Ray Professional Building. Neon sign added for ground floor tenant Professional Drugs 10/29/29 (LVA). c. 1930s-1940s: Ritz Hotel upper floor.

    Neonopolis (2002-) 

    City of Las Vegas demolishes the North 400-block Fremont St late 1998 (Block 34, Clark Townsite). Neonopolis is developed by World Entertainment Centers with funding from Prudential and City of Las Vegas. The mall opens 5/3/2002. Rohit Joshi purchases Neonopolis for $25M in 2006.

    414 Fremont. 1920s: McNamee residence (1926, 34 dir). 1946: Johnson’s Women’s Clothing. 1972: Cinemas 1,2,3 (triplex developed by L. Katz, Nevada Theatre Corp - RJ 4/23/72). Cinema closed c. 1986.
    418 Fremont. 1946. Ronzone’s dept store opens in Oct. 4, closes in 1970 (RJ 10/3/46, RJ 1/8/70 p4). 1970s: Pant Village. 1980s-1990s: Discount Souvenir.
    422 Fremont. 1930s-1940s: Union Oil stn. 1948: Woolworth opens Nov 18 (RJ 11/17/48). (Arc. H. H. Whiteley?) 1970: Woolworth gutted by fire July 31, reopened early '71. 1998: Woolworths demolished late in the year. City of LV pays C. Hecht $3M for land (RJ 3/24/98).

    501-505 Fremont. 1952: National Dollar Store. Joe Shoong chain, VP Richard Tam. Construction seen 11/51, opened Mar '52 (RJ 3/27/52). Note: address is aka 100 Las Vegas Blvd. Clark County property record dates this incorrectly at 1939.
    509-511 Fremont. Circa 1953/1954.

    1941: Sears & Roebuck purchase the site from the L. Hunt estate and others (RJ 7/18/41). 1942, June: Sears 2-floor building opened (RJ 6/24/42). 1948: third story added (RJ 6/30/64). 1965, Nov: Sears vacates (RJ 10/25/68). 1968: Sale to Gaughan & Exber, then sale to Central Telephone Co. (RJ 10/25/68). 1970: Covered in bricks. Centel occupied the building from 1970-1983 (RJ 5/9/70, 6/30/86). 1986: Las Vegas Metro Police Dept. Vacant c. 2000-2013.

    611 Fremont. 1946. Fremont Drugs (1946-c. 1976)
    631 Fremont. 1957? Dreamland Furniture. 1965, Mar: Whisky 'a Go-Go (Reed Snitker). 1973: Whisky closed, license transfers to Mr Reeds (22 Fremont).


    FREMONT & 7TH

    700 Fremont. City Center Motel (1957-) 

    1931: site selected by L. Hunt for a planned 5-floor hotel (LVA 3/31/31 p1-2, LVA 4/23/31). 1956: Land purchsed by A & JT Franklin bros from the Ronzone family; motel built by Franklin Bros, expected to open by Apr. '57 (RJ 11/21/56, RJ 10/30/64).

    707 Fremont. Orbit Inn (1963-1987), Container Park (2013-) 

    701-707 was used as a car lot in the 40s-50s. Gold Sun Homes build a model home at 707 in the mid 50s. First record of Orbit Inn is an ad for clerk, RJ 11/12/62. 1963 is the earliest verified open date. Motel built by Franklin bros; J Gabriele, architect. 70-room motel with coffee shop, and pool over parking garage (RJ 10/30/64). First sign. Mid 60s: sign v. 2 with "Motel." 1967, January: Explosion damage. Early 70s: Sign v. 3 and neon added to restaurant. 1978: Space ship sign, on "Nov 10" but year unknown unconfirmed. 1986: Orbit Inn possibly closed. 1989: Becomes Days Inn. 2002: Days Inn may have closed around this time. 2004: Motel restaurant becomes Take 1 Nightclub; the motel later operates as Good Day Inn, and Motel 6. 2012: DTP buy the property from Exber Inc in Feb. (RJ 5/16/2012), demolished in Oct. Container Park opens 11/25/2013.

    800 Fremont. Alameda Oil Co #2 gas station (c. 1931-1960s). 2014: DTP.

    824 Fremont. Windsor Hotel (1956-1972)

    NW corner of Fremont & 9th. Built and operated by Loretta Holmes (d. 1979). Demolished mid 80s, replaced with a parking lot. 2013: The Hydrant Club, DTP.

    899 Fremont. Western Hotel (1970-2012) | 1963: Opened c. June as Tod Motel, 115 South 8th St. Fay Tobler & Vernes Oliver Development (T.O.D.) owners and developers (also with TOD on LV Blvd, similar sign on at Casino Center Dr.) c. 1965: Tod becomes Western Motel. 1971, January 1: J Gaughan & M Exber open the casino on 899 Fremont, rebranding the motel and casino Western Hotel & Bingo Parlor. 2000s: Sale to Barrick Gaming, then Tamares Group. Closed 1/12/2012. Hotel portion demolished 2013. DTP.

    1930: Ambassador Apartments "Now nearly completed"-LVA 8/28/30. Sam Mickulich, owner. 1938: listed as Ambassador Auto Court, and as Motel by mid 40s. C. 1977: East wing added (Best Western Ambassador). 1979: Reopened as Ambassador East (with casino) under J Gaughan (RJ 7/1/79, 7/17/79). Closed c. 2002 (LVS 11/24/03). Demolished 2007. DTP.

    1313 Fremont. Valley Motel (1952-2013) Built by Franklin bros (RJ 10/30/64). Vegas Vic added to the motel sign mid 50s. Sign removed c. 2006. Closed c. 2012. DTP.
    1322 Fremont. Navajo Auto Court (1944-1949), Fair Price Motel (1950-1963). Demolished. Mid City Motel (1964-1973), Marianna Inn (1974-1990s), LV Back Packers Resort/Hotel (1990s-2000s), Las Vegas Hostel. DTP.
    1404 Fremont. Meadows Restaurant (1955) Arc. J. Maher Weller.
    1411 Fremont. Hamilton House Motel (1958-1970s). Motel unit located on Fremont at 15th, opened in 1958. Older bungalows on an adjacent North 15st St property. Owner: H.M. Delkin-Pavlo.
    1518 Fremont. Vegas Theatre (1942)
    1605 Fremont. Rangler Motel (1953-2013). Economy Motel.
    1625 Fremont. Outdoor Equipment Co (1946-1960), Leonard's Furniture (1960s), Salvation Army (1970s), Milan Bakery (1984-2010). The county record dates the building to 1952, however Review-Journal 2/15/46 p6-7 describe a new building for Outdoor Equipment Co which operated here continuously through 1960. First photo found is 1966.
    1701 Fremont. Travis Inn (1942-1947), Thelma Motel (1948-1950), Desert Moon Motel (1950-). Thelma Motel owned by Thelma Beck Fritchley. First record of Desert Moon is a sign construction permit, RJ 10/22/50. 


    FREMONT & BRUCE


    1800 Fremont. Clark Inn (1939-1987) Building permit issued to E. A. and O. W. Clark in 1939 (RJ 7/17/39, RJ 8/2/39); other sources date the motel to 1940. Original address was 1900; original name was Clark Auto Court, with "Clark Inn" beginning 1942. Neon sign addition circa 1960. Demolished 1988 (RJ 11/5/88). Sign remained on site until early 2000s. Restored sign relocated to Las Vegas Blvd in 2023.
    1808 Fremont. Bonanza Lodge Motel (1947-2000s). Built facing the west wing of Purple Sage Motel (1920 Fremont), shared courtyard. 2014: Merged with Purple Sage motel as Sterling Gardens.
    1917 Fremont. Yetta Auto Court (1943-1950)
    1919 Fremont. Vagabond Motel (1953-1990s). Unknown business or residence developed here prior to 1953, details unknown. Clark County assessor dates "Building No. 3" to 1936. c. 1996: Milestone Motel ("Vagabond is being renamed Milestone” - J.L. Smith, RJ, 10/13/96). 2000s: Zari's Motel, Ariza Motel. 2013: Palm Piazza. Letters "MOTEL" removed from the sign.
    1920 Fremont. Purple Sage Motel (c. 1945-c. 2014). 1940: Possibly the location of Purple Sage nightclub, "east end of Fremont St, at the edge of the city limits" (RJ 3/28/40). Property purchased by John L. Love in 1945, motel announced (RJ 5/7/45). No other mention until 1948. There are two back-to-back wings of this motel. The west wing is original, the east wing built c. 1950s. Origianl motel sign changed c. 1950s. Sign removed 2014; motel merged with Sterling Gardens, 1808 Fremont.

    2009 Fremont. Sky Ranch Motel (1955-2017) Zotti family, opened early '55. Second sign by late '56. 1989: Bharat Patel, owner, through 2021. 2023: '56 sign altered, neon removed.
    2019 Fremont. Roulette Motel (1955-) 1954: 13-unit motel built by Glazier & Hall (RJ 6/27/54). Open date unknown. Sign modified late 50s-early 60s. 1960s postcard states 22 units. 2022: Motel converted to apartments. Sign removed Feb. 2022, donated to City of Las Vegas.
    2028 Fremont. Travelodge Downtown (1960-1990s), Economy Inn Motel (1990s-2000s), Fremont Gardens (2010s), SHARE Village #4 (2020s)
    2033 Fremont. Towne & Country Motel (1960-2023), Boardwalk Suites (2024-).
    2100 Fremont. Blue Onion Drive-In (1956-c. 1970). 1956: Chain restaurant breaks ground in May, opens in December; Zick & Sharp, architects (RJ 5/8/56, 12/19/56). 1970: Closed after two years of union picketing and IRS seizure. Sold to S Mintz, Blue Angel. (RJ 4/16/70, 6/11/70).
    2110 Fremont. Blue Angel Motel (1957-2011) Built and originally owned by Sierra Construction; I.C. Marhshak, architect; Western Neon (Betty Willis), signs. Groundbreaking 9/10/57 (RJ). Opening date unknown, circa late '57 to 4/58. 1958: Blue Heaven Lounge opened at 2025 E Charleston (C Lynch & partners, RJ 8/13/58). Motel demolished 2015, statue removed 2017.
    2212 Fremont. Gray-Son Motel (1952-1984). F. Gray Sr, owner (RJ 6/27/52). Became Liberty Inn, 80s-90s, then merged with Vegas Motel, 2216 Fremont.
    2216 Fremont. Vegas Motel (1964-2015). Demolished 2015, sign removed 2019.

    Meadows Club (1931-1942) Off Boulder Hwy near present E Charleston & Mojave Rd.

    Den of Seven Thieves (1931), Black Cat Inn (1931-1932). “One block off Boulder on the road to the Meadows.” Den of Seven Thieves was operated by Walter A Hawkins and Charles A. Reid, closed by Prohis on 9/8/31, the day after a fire at Meadows club. It reopened as Black Cat Inn. Babe Lomax, hostess, Jan. 1932. Closed by Spring 1932.
